What Is a Fresh 48 Session & How to Prepare for One
by a Baltimore Fresh 48 Photographer
The first hours after your baby is born are raw, emotional, and incredibly special. A Fresh 48 session is designed to document those fleeting, magical moments during your baby’s first two days of life—typically done at the hospital, birth center, or home (if that’s where your birth takes place). Unlike a full newborn session that happens in the studio, a Fresh 48 is meant to capture your baby’s tiny details, first yawns, bonding with parents and siblings, and the authentic beauty of those early hours.
If you’re expecting and considering a Fresh 48 session, here’s what you need to know to prepare and make the most of it.
There’s nothing quite like the emotional intensity of those first 48 hours. Your baby is brand new. Your love is overflowing. Everything is fresh, from hospital bracelets and tiny toes to the sleepy snuggles and tearful introductions between siblings. This session preserves those memories forever and just as they are. No props, no posing, no pressure. Just real, beautiful storytelling.
1. Let Your Photographer Know When You’re in Labor
Since these sessions happen within the first two days of birth, communication is key. Let your photographer know once you’re in labor (or your partner can send a quick text) so scheduling can happen as smoothly as possible.
2. Keep It Simple
You don’t need to overthink outfits or appearance. A soft robe or cozy swaddle is more than enough. Choose neutral, comfortable clothing for yourself—something you feel good in. Your baby can be wrapped in a hospital blanket or a simple onesie. These sessions are all about connection, not perfection.
3. Embrace the Natural Light
Whenever possible, we’ll shoot during the day and use available window light to create a soft, natural look. If your hospital or birthing space has a good source of light, try to open the curtains ahead of time to brighten up the room.
4. Keep Baby Close
Your baby doesn’t need to “perform” or be on a schedule. We’ll capture everything as it unfolds—feeding, diaper changes, cuddles, and sleepy stretches. If siblings or grandparents are visiting, they can be included too.
5. Don’t Stress About the Room
Fresh 48 sessions aren’t about perfection—they’re about storytelling. While I might move a few things around for a clean background, there’s no need to do a full tidy-up. The focus will be on you and your new little love.
If you’re in the Baltimore area and expecting a little one, I’d be honored to help capture your baby’s very first hours earth-side. Fresh 48 sessions are full of real moments, soft snuggles, and the kind of joy you never want to forget.
These sessions are limited based on due dates, so reach out early to get on the calendar. Let’s tell your story exactly as it unfolds.
